Life after Leaving Cert

Good evening you lovelies! Well if you've been keeping an eye on my Facebook page, you would have seen that I went to the Careers Options West 2013 workshop in the Galway Bay on Tuesday. Myself and a few other of my classmates went along to talk to students about careers in fashion and what GTI can offer them. We got a load of good feedback but I couldn't help but notice an ever so dominating question, "what are the points?".

Okay so it's really no secret that we do in fact need points to do most courses. Whether it may be 200 or 600 points, it's the only thing on a LC student's mind. Yes of course it's important but it is no way the be all and end all. A lot of you were also worried about getting judged for wanting to go to a school like GTI. I won't lie to you, I was too. That was why literally no one in my year knew I wanted to go into fashion. Whenever I seemed to tell anyone, all I'd get was "why the hell would you do that" or "that's a dead end job with no prospects". Pardon my language, but that is complete and utter bullshit. It was so upsetting and shocking to hear from some of you that the influence of what your peers had to say is what was putting you off of doing the course. I know it's hard to hear because I've heard it myself. I got 395 points (which I was so so happy with and still am!) and when people heard that they'd ask "why the hell are you in GTI then if there's courses in NUIG that you'd be able to do with those points?". These are what you call the narrow minded. They have been so brain washed into believing that a national University is the only way to go that it starts having a negative influence on those around them.

With my classmates Sinead and Saskia from Keepin' it Real and one of our tutors, Orla Moore.

This was my main piece of advice from the day, DO NOT take any notice of what anyone has to say to you about YOUR future. What you want to do is your business and as long as you work hard and love what you do, it will take you far. That applies to all courses! The people who tell you that you're wasting your time or anything else negative, they're just envious of the fact that they don't have the balls to pursue their own dreams. Every course is what YOU make it whether it be Art, Science, Business or Medicine. There is life after leaving cert and I'm living it.

Do what you love, work hard and never look back. That's all I've done and it's served me well.

Much Love,
Shannon.

Photo Shop 101

Good afternoon everyone! Hope that you're all getting suited and booted for the upcoming Halloween festivities. I, for one, am going to be enjoying my night curled up in a onesie watching scary movies, eating sweets and drinking wine with my best friend. We have been doing it every year since we were thirteen so why not continue our tradition :P Call me a granny but I always have fun ;)

Anyway, over the past month or so I've been introduced to photo shop. It's a module in my course and I was really sceptical about it at first. Also, anyone who knows me well is aware that I am rubbish when it comes to any sort of technology (I can see why I get called a granny :P).  But I was able to pick it up really quickly and now it's one of my favourite subjects. It's so handy for mood boards or any sort of quick promotion poster. I've learned to love it and I am even considering investing in it once I get a decent laptop. So here are a few of the pieces I've done over the past month :)

Who else knows how to use photo shop and what do you make of it?

Shannon.

Dear Diary...

Well it's been a hectic couple of weeks. Between college and work, it's hard to find time to blog properly. I've been more focused on promoting my facebook page at the moment more than my actual blog page. A bit of self promotion is always needed in an industry like this.

I haven't been doing much outside college or work. I get up, go to college, go to work, go home, do assignments, shower if I have enough energy then go to sleep to start it all again when I wake up. I've also found it hard to keep in touch with my friends outside of college. But luckily for me, they're very patient :P

I went to a wedding on friday and I had so much fun! I haven't been to a wedding since I was eight so it was nice to get all dressed up. It was also another excuse for me to buy more clothes :P And I also got a new set of gels! Yay for hand pampering!!

NEW NAILS!!! :D

I've also started the Christmas shopping! Yes I'm the annoying bitch who always has it done by the end of November whilst everyone else is panicking. I just can't handle being unprepared and if I can do it now, then why not?

And lastly, I am going to be in the Galway bay at 9.30am on Tuesday October 22nd to talk about the careers in fashion and to promote my course along with two of my other classmates. Be sure to pop in if you're interested :D

Much love,
Shannon.

Dear Diary...

Oh my god it has been a hectic couple of weeks. Not that I even did that many things but it's actually a lot of hard work juggling college, work, assignments and friends all at the same time. Of course both the printer and laptop broke the second I got my first assignment and I've spent the majority of my free time in my neighbors house printing of EVERYTHING. It was my friends movie launch on Saturday just gone as well as my friends birthday so it was great to have some head space for the evening. The movie was FAB and there was a band after which was fun. I got to wear my new top so I was way too over excited :P

Currently I'm doing a project on stylists, photographers and journalists for college. Basically we have to research and talk about 6 stylists, 6 photographers and one fashion journalist then choose one of them to develop in detail. Of course I chose the amazing Isabella Blow. For those of you who do not know her, she was the woman who discovered Alexander McQueen and Philip Treacy (two of my fave designers) so choosing her to write about wasn't hard. Check out the documentary "McQueen and I". It's about the creative journey that Isabella and Alexander conquered together.

We also have a photo shoot coming up and I'm choosing vintage Dior as my inspiration. Most of you know that he was my inspiration for my dress from last year. I just think he's great and captures everything good there is to see in a woman.

Overall, this year is hard. There's a lot of work, multitasking and jumping from job to job. I've even been considering taking a break from blogging for a while. Ah sure, we'll see what the next following weeks bring. I do feel better about my future now because I finally found a course that suits me and I'm excited to start looking into it.

Anyways, let me know what you think of my blog in general and this segment. Be sure to give my page a little like if you feel like making my day <3

Much Love,
Shannon.

"Boohoo" said my bank account...

HELLO HUMANS! Welcome to another post where I openly discuss my uncontrollable addiction to boohoo.com (it was not healthy for me to get a debit card). It shames me to admit that I have bought at least one thing off boohoo every week for the past 4 weeks... OH DEAR LORD.

I've now decided that I'm totally okay with it. I'm off to a wedding in a couple of weeks and of course I needed a new outfit! I got this gorgeous midi tutu skirt for €30 and an off the shoulder long sleeved top for €15 (we need to keep the arms warm in the chilly weather). But still, the outfit was not complete without a bag and some shoes so I headed to New Look. That was a successful trip. I got a cool monochrome slouch bag for €15 and guess what? I got an amazing pair of platform white lace heels for just €15 as well! I found them in the sale section so it had to be done. I then picked up a red and black peplum top from the clothes sale section for just a fiver which I plan on wearing for a friends movie premiere next weekend (whoooo!).

I also may have accidentally spent a large sum of money on Tuesday in the New Look mid season sale, Penneys and in River Island but I am very okay with that now :P So here's what I bought ;)
