The Belgium born designer Raf Simons, born in 1968, has
been announced as the new creative director for Christian Dior. He is a
designer best known for his dramatic career change as he originally graduated
in Industrial design and Furniture design in 1991.
Simons launched his own label in 1995 and was appointed
creative director of Jil Sander in 2005, ten years after the launch of his
label. He was also head professor of the fashion department of the University
of Applied Arts, Vienna, where he stayed until June 2005 when he was offered
the creative director’s position. Simons’ look is all about new shapes, modern
proportions and pure construction. His looks are also quite simplistic in
comparison to the designs of Galliano. Simons began to finalise contracts with
Dior on December 13th 2011 which would see him replace John Galliano
as creative director following Galliano’s dismissal the previous year.
It was confirmed that Simons was in fact the new creative director for Dior on the 9th of April 2012. His first Dior
collection was scheduled to show during the Couture Collections the following July.
The impact that Raf made on the fashion industry was immediate.
